the parable of the talents
None of what we think we own are really ours. Not our talents, our strength, nor even our children - much less wealth and possessions. Our churches remind us every so often (because we conveniently forget) that we are but stewards of what God has blessed us with, and entrusted upon us. It is interesting to note these twin dimensions of God’s gifts. As blessings, we can draw upon them and enjoy them as part of the abundant life that God promises. But at the end of our lives on earth, we have to account for how we had handled them. Tim Myers, visiting speaker to our church, expounded on the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) yesterday. At the closing of a profound yet enlightening sermon, he made a reference again to v.15, “To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability.” The same verse, from a different angle, also means that ‘if you are given much, whether wealth or abilities, much also will be expected of you.’ It makes me think twice about asking for more. Tim, however, pointed out that since it is God who provides the talents and the matching abilities, we don’t have to worry about not meeting His expectations if we dispense them as prompted. To take v.15 a tad deeper: Why struggle for more (wealth, status, etc) than you can handle on the responsibility end of the deal? Isn’t it more relaxing to wait to be bestowed with goodness on the one hand, and the matching capacity to give or serve on the other? And, to stray a little off-tangent, if it is ultimately the sovereign God who gives, who can take it from you? So, don’t take it too hard when you feel cheated or denied of whatever are ‘rightfully yours’.
